what is it that you saw?
that night by the bleak sheets
of ice covered streets
there was not a soul asleep
yet emptiness everywhere
in their eyes, in their hands
in their hollow, shell-covered
fossils of souls, drifting.
what was it that you saw?
the night when the rain hurled fury
and the land turned black
the streetlights like stars
amidst the paper thin glow
of one smile reflected in a puddle
at the tip of your shoes
i still reach out for you
across the other side of the world and over
the miles where my fingertips meet,
even momentarily
